The rest of the afternoon and evening was spent in a leisurely fashion. Mr. Nanjee picked up groceries while Jayden did some homework. What would Ma think of that? Jayden giggled to herself. Later, they made pizza for dinner and then watched a movie. Mr. Nanjee tried to broach the subject of Jayden’s upcoming prom but she ended the conversation before it began.

“Not happening!” she declared. “And not my style.” By ten o’clock, Jayden was falling asleep on the comfy couch.

“Why don’t you head to bed now,” suggested Mr. Nanjee. “Hopefully, you’ll have a good sleep without any mountain-climbing dreams.”

“That would be nice,” responded Jayden.

“But don’t forget to keep pen and paper beside your bed,” he added, “so you can write down what happens in your dream.”

Jayden nodded and gave her dad a long, tight hug. “Thanks, Dad,” she whispered.

When she was ready for bed, Jayden took a notepad and pen from her back pack. Placing them on the nightstand, she turned off the bedside light and lay down. She closed her eyes and embraced the familiar blackness leading to the sleeping room of her mind. But she could sense the blackness itself was only temporary and it would eventually lead into the dark dream performance of the night’s main event — climbing.
